APHA Database Collecting Information On Projects, Interventions Addressing Disparities

Projects To Be Featured At National Public Health Week 2004

The American Public Health Association (APHA) is looking for smart, innovative projects/interventions that are currently being used around the country to help end health disparities. The projects don not need to be "proven," just promising ones that have the potential to make a difference.

As communities across the country struggle with widespread disparities in all aspects of health care, APHA is working to bring attention to projects and interventions that work toward guaranteed quality care for all.

For National Public Health Week (NPHW) 2004, APHA will be collecting and highlighting a wide variety of these projects/interventions to inspire other people who work on health care issues and want to reduce health disparities in their communities.

Throughout the week, APHA will highlight on-the-ground examples of local projects using community projects/interventions to reverse the trends in health disparities. In addition to promoting community-based success stories, APHA also will use NPHW to offer health professionals, the private and public sector and communities projects/interventions to help in the battle to eliminate all types of health disparities including but not limited to

  • Ethnic and racial,
  • Geographical,
  • Disease specific,
  • Community infrastructure and resources
  • Environmental justice,
  • Health literacy,
  • Workforce diversity in the health care system
  • Age,
  • Gender, and
  • Sexual Orientation

Anyone working on health disparity projects or interventions in the field is encouraged to visit APHA's website at www.apha.org/nphw/ and enter their projects/interventions into our collective database.

In the coming months, APHA will be providing more tools to help public health professionals and community leaders plan a compelling week of events spotlighting community projects/interventions, ideas and discussions around this important issue. APHA wants to hear about your projects and interventions that are working in your community. You can participate in NPHW efforts by:

  • submitting your projects to our projects/interventions database,
  • signing our guest book to receive updates about the planning and implementation of NPHW, and
  • listing your NPHW events on our web site.
