NIH, NLM Launch American Indian Health Portal

The National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine has launched American Indian Health, an information portal addressing the health and well-being of of American Indians. The Web-based resource on American Indian Health is designed to bring together health and medical resources pertinent to the American Indian population including policies, consumer health information, and research. Links are provided here to an assortment of documents, Web sites, databases, and other resources.

With more than four million U.S. residents able claim American Indian or Alaska Native ancestry, in whole or in part, American Indians enjoy a wide diversity of cultural distinctions and population groups are disbursed throughout the country. While this diversity and richness is celebrated asset of America, it has made it difficult to provide American Indian and Alaska Native populations with a uniform, readily accessible health care system.

The new Website provides a single point of access to the most pertinent and up-to-date information on American Indian health. Visit the site at http://americanindianhealth.nlm.nih.gov.
