Europe and the Mediterranean

Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Peace Corps was asked by several countries in Central and Eastern Europe to assist in their transition to market-oriented democracies. In responding to these requests, Volunteers have also helped overcome the historically limited contact between Americans and the people of the region, establishing new bonds of friendship and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

In the Mediterranean, Peace Corps Volunteers have served since 1962. One of our newest programs, Jordan, is also in this region.
