Celebrate
Brevard County Beaches on Earth Day 2004
Celebrate the splendor of Brevard
County beaches and the natural environment that they support with
science students from Cape View Elementary School, as well as local
and federal environmental organizations on Earth Day, Thursday, April
22, 2004.
Virginia Barker, Director of the
Brevard County Natural Resources Management office and Johnnie Burton,
Director of the Minerals Management Service will describe the process
of using sand from offshore sources to replenish beaches. They will
also lead the students in an exercise illustrating the importance of
beach replenishment to the natural environment, particularly sea
turtles and dune vegetation.
Reporters are invited to cover and
attend this event. The public is also invited.
We will gather in the parking lot
of the Cherie Down Park (8492 Ridgewood Ave.) in Cape Canaveral and
walk a short distance to the beach at 10 a.m. on the 22nd. For more
information, contact Rebecca Phipps, Minerals Management Service, at

MMS manages the nation's oil,
natural gas, and other mineral resources on the Outer Continental
Shelf in federal offshore waters. MMS also collects, accounts for, and
disburses mineral revenues from federal and American Indian lands.
Between 1982 and 2003, MMS distributed more than $135 billion in
revenues from onshore and offshore lands, an average of more than $6
billion per year, to the Nation, States and American Indians. Nearly
$1 billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation
Fund annually for the development of State and Federal park and
