Hispanic Heritage Month

You may listen to this story in Quicktime or  download a .mp3 file .

Profile America — Wednesday, September 15th. A nationwide observance with a definite Latin flavor starts today and runs through mid-October — it’s National Hispanic Heritage Month. Salsa will be the featured word in both food and music for events scheduled across the country. Started 36 years ago, the celebration marks the colorful and vibrant culture and history of the nation’s fastest-growing ethnic group. There are 40-million people of Hispanic origin in the U.S., nearly 6-out-of-10 of Mexican ancestry. Their rate of growth accounts for about half the total gain in the nation’s population since the 2000 Census. More than 10 percent of Hispanics are preschoolers under the age of 5. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at www.census.gov.
