Crop Quality and Fruit Insects Research Unit

Robert Mangan  is the Research Leader of the Crop Quality and Fruit Insects Research Unit.

Mission Statement:

CROP QUALITY AND FRUIT INSECTS RESEARCH UNIT (CQFIRU) develops new knowledge and new and improved technology for eliminating pests, particularly fruit flies.  Within 80 miles of the SARC, there are nine bridges cross linking the U.S. and Mexico.  Tons of agricultural products cross these bridges each day.  Transportation of these products into the U.S. interior will be facilitated by a new interstate highway (I-69) leading north, as well as creation of a 5-lane highway leading from the Progreso Bridge into the new highway system.  Research on preventing the introduction and spread of exotic pests in imported commodities is critical to the protection of U.S. agriculture, facilitates international trade, and supplies safe, nutritious commodities to U.S. consumers.  The CQFIRU has an international role conducting research on ways to eliminate pests, such as fruit flies, from harvested produce, and on internal and external factors affecting ripening, deterioration, and decay of harvested produce.  Construction of a new 24,000 sq. ft. facility to house this unit along with Location Support signals the importance of this research program.
