From U.S. 3rd Fleet Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) will depart in mid-October for a scheduled deployment. The ship will conduct naval operations in support of national and theater cooperative security commitments in the western Pacific.

Abraham Lincoln is the flagship for Commander, USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (CSG), Rear Adm. Doug Crowder. On deployment, Lincoln will be home to Commander, Carrier Air Wing 2, commanded by Capt. Craig Geron. Capt. Kendall L. Card commands Lincoln. The specific composition of the additional ships in the strike group accompanying Abraham Lincoln will be announced at a later date.

“Because of our capabilities under the new Fleet Response Plan (FRP), our deployment will actually result in having spent fewer days at sea overall," explained Crowder. “We will continue to train for this mission, becoming progressively more ready as we depart the West Coast and head across the Pacific.”

What makes FRP such a critical story is that a new approach to deployment preparation makes the Navy more responsive to unpredictable threats in the current global security environment. FRP allows the Navy to retain current readiness while achieving greater flexibility. Adm. Vern Clark, Chief of Naval Operations, noted recently, “We are going to create a force which is ready for the call to duty at any time.”

Lincoln's embarked air wing consists of multiple aircraft that can be used to conduct a range of missions, from strike to providing a visible presence to demonstrate resolve in a crisis.

This is the first deployment for the Lincoln CSG since the ship and crew returned from their historic 10-month deployment in May 2003 supporting Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
