NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Nearly 200 Sailors reunited with family and friends at Naval Station Norfolk, Sept. 17, when the guided-missile frigate USS Elrod (FFG 55) returned from a four-and-a-half month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism (GWOT).
Elrod departed Norfolk April 30 accompanied by the guided-missile destroyers USS Ross (DDG 71) and USS Ramage (DDG 61). Both Ross and Ramage returned to Norfolk Aug. 31.
Under the Fleet Response Plan (FRP), the Navy remains committed to deployments not exceeding six-months, unless mission requirements dictate otherwise. This deployment illustrates the Navy’s philosophy of “presence with a purpose,” in planning deployments.
During the deployment, Elrod carried out Maritime Interdiction Operations in support of Operation Active Endeavor, anti-submarine warfare exercises with NATO forces in both the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. Elrod also participated in Operation Atlas Shield, which provided maritime protection for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
