Fighting continues in Eastern Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Army News Service, Sept. 8, 2004) – One Soldier was killed and several injured during engagements between Multi-National Forces and Iraqi insurgents Sept. 7 in the Al Thawra district of Eastern Baghdad, also known as Sadr City.

A rocket-propelled grenade, or RPG round, was fired at Task Force Baghdad Soldiers at about 12:30 a.m. Then at about 1 a.m., an improvised explosive device detonated. Neither incident resulted in injuries or damage, officials reported.

But at 1:30 a.m., a Task Force Baghdad Soldier was injured in another RPG attack. And at about 2:30 a.m., another Task Force Baghdad Soldier was injured in an RPG attack.

Another IED detonated at about 8 a.m. in an attack that resulted in no injuries or damage.

Soldiers came under attack at about 9:30 a.m. while waiting for an explosive ordnance disposal team at the site of a possible IED. One Soldier was killed and two Soldiers were injured in the attack. The name of the Soldier killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, officials said.

Five IEDs detonated at about 10 a.m. in an attack that officials said resulted in no injuries. But a vehicle was damaged in the attack.

Another RPG round was fired at Task Force Baghdad Soldiers at 10:30 a.m. resulting in no injuries or damages.

At about 11:30 a.m., a Task Force Baghdad Soldier was injured when an IED was detonated., officials said.

At noon, an IED detonated in an attack that resulted in no injuries, but another vehicle was damaged in the attack.

At about 12:30 p.m., a mortar impacted near a school resulting in no injuries to Task Force Baghdad Soldiers or damage to equipment.

The incidents are under investigation, officials reported.
