What does it mean to be a volunteer?

Being a volunteer just means that you want to help work on a project or a task without being paid for it. Volunteering is based on the ideal of service -- helping people in your community build a better future, which in the long run will help us all.

The are plenty of ways that people in your city or town volunteer their time, and many of you may be volunteers yourself. Volunteers in your community may help build houses, serve food in a soup kitchen, work at a local library, or maybe even in your classroom.

What does it mean to be a Peace Corps Volunteer?

Being a Peace Corps Volunteer means you have the same goals as any volunteer -- to help people build a better future. Peace Corps Volunteers, however, live and work in another country for two years. Peace Corps Volunteers serve in countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Eastern and Central Europe, and the Middle East. They learn a new language (sometimes two or three languages), adapt to a new culture, and make friendships that last a lifetime.
