What Can
Parents Do?
Just a few simple steps can vastly decrease
the chances that you or your children will be the victims
of unsafe situations on the Internet.
- Make frequent backups (see www.pageweb.com/autopage/help_backups.html)
- Put your computer in a common location
in your home
- Monitor your child's activities
online
- Learn about computers!
- Ask your child to show you how...
- Ask a friend
- Take a course
- Do not respond to "survey"
type questionnaires (and be wary of anyone) asking for:
- personal information
- preferences
- personal opinions
- credit card numbers
- information accompanied by cash or prize offers
(If you receive a survey of this type, forward
it to us at safekids@ncis.navy.mil)
- Control Internet access in your
home
- Make sure children know your rules
for communicating in chat rooms
- Practice safe computing
- If it involves a personal meeting
or confrontation, call local law enforcement or base police
right away.
- If it is not an emergency but involves
communication on your computer, forward it to us at: safekids@ncis.navy.mil.
- Make sure you tell us where you are and how to contact
you directly if necessary.
- While waiting, do not delete anything from your hard
drive (especially email and files from the person you
suspect.) Save disks, tapes, et cetera in case they
are needed.
