Product Description

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) Composites are produced from multiple AVHRR daily observations that have been composited together to create a nearly cloud-free image showing maximum greenness. An NDVI ratio is produced from bands one and two of the AVHRR composite to produce a derived NDVI band composite.

The following NDVI prodcuts are available:

Conterminous U.S. and Alaska Weekly and biweekly NDVI composites date from January 1989 to present. U.S. composites are cast to the Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection. Alaska composites are cast to the Albers Equal-Area Conic projection. Distribution of the NDVI composites will depend on the age of the image:

  • 7- and 14-day (Current) NDVI composites are weekly and biweekly updates that have been produced within the last four weeks. The data will include a composite for each of the acquired AVHRR bands, as well as a derived NDVI band. The files are available in binary (8-bit) format, and they are distributed via FTP.

  • 7- and 14-day (Recent) NDVI composites are weekly and biweekly updates that were produced from the end of the previous year until four weeks prior to present. The data will include a composite for each of the acquired AVHRR bands, as well as a derived NDVI band. Satellite zenith, solar zenith, relative azimuth, and acquisition dates are also provided. The files are available in binary (8-bit) format, and they are distributed on 8-mm tape.

  • 14-day (Historical) NDVI composites consist of biweekly composites that were produced from January 1989 to the end of the previous year. The data will include a composite for each of the acquired AVHRR bands, as well as a derived NDVI band. Satellite zenith, solar zenith, relative azimuth, and acquisition dates are also provided. The files are available in binary (8-bit) format, and they are distributed on CD-ROM and DVD.

North American 10-day composites consist of 10-day composited AVHRR data and a derived NDVI band for limited dates betweeen April 1992 and May 1996. The data is cast to the Interrupted Goode's Homolosine projection. The files are provided in binary (8-bit) format, and they are distributed via FTP download on a band-by-band basis.

Global 10-day composites consist of 10-day composited AVHRR data and a derived NDVI band for limited dates betweeen April 1992 and May 1996. The data is cast to the Interrupted Goode's Homolosine projection. Subsampled resolution and geographic subsets are also available. The files are provided in binary (8-bit) format, and they are distributed via FTP download on a band-by-band basis.

Miscellaneous Products consist of a various AVHRR data, NDVI composites, and ancillary datasets that complement AVHRR products. The available products are:

  • Conterminous U.S. AVHRR Companion Disc consists of a July 1991 U.S. NDVI composite along with supplemental GIS and land cover information. The data is cast to the Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection, with a resolution of 1.1 kilometer. The files are provided in generic binary raster and optional vector (written as ANSI-standard ASCII characters in fixed block) format. Distributed on CD-ROM only.

    Files on the disc include:

    • - Conterminous U.S. Biweekly NDVI Composite for July 5-18, 1991
      - 30 arc-second DEM
      - USGS and WRD hydrology data
      - Soil Conservation Service Land Resource Areas
      - EPA ecoregions
      - DLG state and county boundaries with attribute codes
      - IMDISP and Land Analysis System (LAS) label files for each image
      - display software

  • Conterminous U.S. Land Cover Characteristics CD contains a land cover characteristics database with seasonal land cover classification, based on the analysis of AVHRR images collected from March to October 1990. The data is cast to the Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection, with a resolution of 1.1 kilometer. The files are provided in binary (8-bit) format and are distributed on CD-ROM only.

    Files on the disc include:

    • - original 1990 AVHRR data used for analysis
      - initial and final interpretations of land cover regions
      - descriptive and quantitive attributes of each land cover region
      - thematic interpretations of land regions
      - display software

  • Northern Great Plains CD contains 33 weekly AVHRR composite images for the northern Great Plains. The composites were produced in June and August of 1987, and March through October 1988. The data is cast to the Albers Equal Area projection, with a resolution of 1 km. The files are provided in binary (8-bit) format and are distributed on CD-ROM only.

    Files on the disc include:

    • - 33 weekly AVHRR composites (bands 1-5, afternoon coverage)
      - 33 weekly NDVI composites
      - satellite and solar azimuth and zenith data (by pixel)
      - state, county, and ecological region information

  • Land-Sea Mask and Shorelines consist of rasterized vector data which can be used in combination with AVHRR and NDVI. This data is derived from the World Vector Shoreline (WVS) and Digital Chart of the World (DCW), and it is cast to the Interrupted Goodes Homolosine projection with a resolution of 1 km. The files are provided in binary (8-bit) format and are distributed via FTP download.
