Reserve Online Services Moving to NKO

NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- Now more than ever, Internet access and computer savvy are necessary, even critical, for both Reserve and active-duty members in order to keep up with fast-changing Navy technology.
To assist members in gaining quick access to Navy information, the Commander Naval Reserve Forces Command (CNRFC) is moving all Reserve online services presently found at the Naval Reserve Knowledge Online (NRKO) portal, www.nrko.navy.mil, to the Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) portal www.nko.navy.mil, by October 2003. One centralized “portal,” or Web site, will then serve both Naval Reserve and active-duty personnel to access several different links.
The initial portals selected for transitions to NKO include the Naval Reserve Order Writing System (NROWS, formerly known as NOWS), Navy and Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), Knowledge Management (KM), Reserve Liaison Officer (RLO) and Mobilization (MOB). Together, these portals allow Reservists to assess and shepherd their careers online.
To access NKO, log on to www.nko.navy.mil and click on the “I’m a New User” button. From there, you will be asked to provide personal information that will be validated against Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) to ensure consistency and user privacy.
The core services of NKO are accessed through the tool bar located on the left of the screen. In addition to buttons for Learning Centers, Training Support Centers, Naval Missions and Communities, an icon has been added for the Naval Reserve. Under this heading, Knowledge Centers, such as NROWS, KM, RLO, NMCI and MOB can be accessed.
“A certain degree of Internet literacy and access are now essential in the Naval Reserve. Not having Internet access today is like not having a telephone was in 1970,” Lt. Cmdr. Dale Drake said. Drake is Commander Naval Reserve Forces Command Information Technology Systems Development program manager.
Asked whether he thought new Naval Reserve affiliates should be counseled in the importance of Internet literacy, Drake said yes, adding, “It’s not just the Reserves; this is the main way information is exchanged in any business – in the military, as well.”
