BAGHDAD, Iraq - An investigation is currently under way into a potential violation of U.S. rules of engagement. On May 21, at about 2 p.m., U.S. forces made contact with a motorcade near Kufa.

A high-speed chase ensued and during the course of the encounter, the Iraqi vehicle was engaged with gunfire. The driver was seriously injured and a passenger was less seriously wounded. Reports indicate that the injured driver was shot at close range by a U.S. Soldier and died.

The incident is under investigation by the Army's Criminal Investigation Division. Until the investigation is completed, it would be inappropriate to comment further.
