The United States Army stands proud and ready to defend our nation. Standing beside the soldier are the scientists, architects, engineers, technicians and other specialists of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Savannah District—a unique Army asset meeting the unique planning and construction needs for the most sophisticated, highly trained and technologically advanced military force in the world.

The Savannah District approaches the 21st century with new and exciting challenges to build a better tomorrow for our military, our communities and the nation. Savannah is a leader among 40 districts in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, staffed by nationally recognized experts in design, construction, navigation, and environmental restoration.

Our proud service to the military spans several decades and today is our largest and most dynamic program. The district was established in Savannah in 1888, but the Corps' presence in Savannah dates back to 1829 when Robert E. Lee, as a young Army engineer officer, commanded the 'Savannah Station' to build Fort Pulaski near the mouth of the Savannah River.

Today the Savannah District proudly serves 13 Army and Air Force bases in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina that are home to most of America's most elite forces. State-of-the-art facilities such as the Freefall Simulator at Fort Bragg, N.C., the largest in the world, to train our soldiers and those of our allies better, faster and with greater cost efficiency. Other projects range from schools, hospitals and clinics to housing, commissaries, airfields, hangars, equipment shops and runways.

When the Army recognized the need for better troop housing a few years ago, Savannah District architects and engineers designed and developed the "Unaccompanied Enlisted Personnel Housing Upgrade Initiative" that has become the new standard for barracks Army-wide—and now dormitories as the Air Force adopts the designs. The defenders of our nation will soon be enjoying the standard of living they deserve with modern amenities, more living space, and contemporary yet functional furnishings. Troops will live and work in military suburbs separated from industrial and training areas—complete communities designed for the soldier by Savannah District experts.

Scientific data collection and assessment combine with state-of-the-art technology for environmental restoration projects. Our military customers are becoming our biggest customers with restoration projects ranging from former training areas to contaminated industrial operations and production facilities.

Savannah District's real estate team aids military families and DoD civilians forced to relocate because of base closures and realignment through the Homeowners' Assistance Program. This federal program provides financial assistance or purchases the homes of eligible military and federal employees. The Savannah District administers the program for DoD for the eastern United States and many overseas locations by working with military commanders, installation housing officials and local realtors. Savannah's real estate division also supports the Wilmington and Charleston Districts and provides services for the Transatlantic Programs Center.

Savannah District's engineers and scientists work diverse, multi-disciplined teams to meet the technological challenges of our rapidly changing and expanding missions. Home to one of the most experienced teams of navigational experts in the country, the district is responsible for maintenance of both the Savannah and Brunswick Harbors, the Intracoastal Waterway along Georgia's coastline, and the Savannah River. The Savannah Harbor is a major foreign-trade and general cargo port that has great economic and strategic importance to the area and the nation. The 3d Infantry Division, a rapid deployment force of the U.S. Army, deploys through the port of Savannah.

The Savannah District is also a leading producer of hydroelectric power, operating three major multi-purpose dams along the Upper Savannah River. These projects prevent about $36 million per year in potential flood damage, enhance water supply for municipalities and industry, provide recreational opportunities for the public, and produce 1.6 million megawatt hours of energy each year—enough electricity to meet the annual energy needs of 90,000 households.

Endangered species, wetlands conservation, and preservation of cultural and archeological endeavors are a regular part of solving the challenges of nature, the environment and the public good in all our flood control and navigational water resources management. Environmental ethics permeate every project or study in which the Savannah District is involved.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Savannah District is a major asset to America. Rich in engineering and scientific talent, the Savannah District is equipped to meet the challenges of the world's strongest military and continues to take the lead in the growth, development and protection of our national resources.
