A Multifaceted Command
The U.S. Army Military District of Washington is a multifaceted command with responsibilities focused primarily in the National Capital Region. MDW's mission is to secure assigned installations; respond to contingencies in the National Capital Region (U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment, 12th Aviation Brigade, and any attached units); conduct ceremonies (U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army Band) and special events (Spirit of America, Twilight Tattoo and Overture 1812 Concert); provide designated administrative, legal and support services; and serve as the Senior Mission Command for assigned installations.

These installations, administratively part of the Northeast Region of the Installation Management Agency, provide an operational base that extends from a vast training facility in central Virginia to the Army presence in the New York City region and including facilities in and around the capital.

MDW is part of Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region, the U.S. Northern Command entity for homeland defense of the capital.
