Two international family registries on breast/ovarian cancer and colon cancer offer concerned individuals the opportunity to participate in research, and investigators opportunities to conduct valuable research.

The Cancer Family Registries (CFRs) are research infrastructures for investigators who are interested in collaboratively conducting population and clinic-based interdisciplinary research, with a main focus on the genetic and molecular epidemiology of breast, ovarian, and colon cancer. The CFRs have information and laboratory specimens contributed by nearly 19,000 families across the spectrum of risk for these cancers, and on population-based or relative controls.

Of particular interest are potential collaborations aimed at:

  • identification and characterization of cancer susceptibility genes;
  • definition of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in cancer etiology; and
  • cooperative research on the translational, preventive, and behavioral aspects of such findings.

Special features include:

  • population-based and clinic-based ascertainment,
  • systematic collection of validated family history,
  • epidemiologic risk factor data,
  • clinical and follow-up data,
  • biospecimens (including tumor blocks and fresh-frozen tissue), and
  • ongoing molecular characterization of the participating families.
