Advanced Technology Office (ATO)

Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Supports investigators who carry out research in the fields of cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, and structural biology at universities and academic medical centers across the United States. In addition, the Institute has a grants program that enhances science education at all levels, from preschool through postgraduate training.

Medical Research Council (UK)
Improves health by promoting research into all areas of medical and related science through its own research establishments, grants to individual scientists, and support for postgraduate students.

National Center for Research Resources Biomedical Technology Program
Supports research, development, and access to sophisticated technologies at resource centers nationwide. This area also funds grants for acquisition of state-of-the art shared instrumentation. Current areas of emphasis include high performance computing, molecular and cellular structural biology technologies, biomedical engineering, noninvasive imaging and spectroscopy, and mathematical modeling and computer simulations.

National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Heads the Human Genome Project for NIH. The HGP is an international research effort to characterize the genomes of human and selected model organisms through complete mapping and sequencing of their DNA. Scientists will be able to utilize the tools and resources developed through the HGP to pursue biological studies that will improve human health.

National Science Foundation
Promotes science and engineering through programs that invest in almost 20,000 research and education projects. Strengthens research potential and education programs at all levels, and appraises the impact of research upon industrial development and the general welfare.

National Institutes of Health Office of Extramural Research
Supports basic, applied, and clinical and health services research to understand the processes underlying human health and to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, diagnose, and treat human diseases and disabilities. Covers funding opportunities, policy, awards data, and receipt dates for research grants from NIH.

Naval Research Laboratory Broad Agency Announcement
Conducts basic and applied research for the Navy in a variety of scientific and technical disciplines. Most research is conducted at its own facilities but the NRL also funds some related research, specified in this announcement.

Technology Research Infrastructure

The Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities
Promotes and facilitates communication and cooperation among core facilities and research laboratories, provides research mechanisms for evaluation and improvement of biotechnical capabilities of core facilities, and promotes the education of facility staff, users, administrators, and other members of the scientific community regarding resource facility functions.

Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory
Provides advanced resources to scientists engaged in research on environmental problems and other national issues; conducts fundamental research on the physical, chemical, and biological processes that underpin critical environmental issues; and educates scientists in the molecular sciences to meet the demanding environmental challenges of the future.

National Center for Research Resources, Access to Research Resources
Catalogs the array of research resource facilities, biomaterials, and models available to biomedical investigators across this country. Serves as institutional, regional or national facilities for clinical, animal or biomedical technology research; those facilities provide expertise, specially adapted laboratories, and research equipment.

The MEMS Exchange
The MEMS Exchange coordinates a virtual fabrication facility for microelectromechanical lsystems (MEMS). Under the MEMS Exchange program, a network of fabrication and design centers is organized and connected, such that the user drafts a process sequence, which can cross the boundaries separating the individual facilities. Communication between the fabrication facilities and the facility and users is accomplished over the Internet. Planning, logistics, and billing, as well as detailed network operation and management are handled by the MEMS Exchange staff, who act as a "trusted intermediary" between the fabrication service providers and the user community.

Technology Transfer Resources

Technology Transfer Branch
Establishes formal collaborations between NCI scientists and companies. This office helps companies and universities comply with Federal laws, regulations, and policies regarding technology transfer.

National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Office of Technology Transfer
Evaluates, protects, monitors, and manages the NIH invention portfolio. This is largely accomplished through overseeing patent prosecution, negotiating and monitoring licensing agreements, and providing oversight and central policy review of Cooperative Research and Development Agreements.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO)
Grants patents for the protection of inventions and registers trademarks. The PTO, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, serves the interest of inventors and businesses with respect to their inventions and corporate products, and service identifications.
