Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group to Return from Deployment

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- More than 4,000 Sailors and Marines attached to the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) will return from deployment Oct. 24.
The ARG includes the Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima, the amphibious transport dock ship USS Nashville (LPD 13), and the Little Creek-based amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50).
The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) (MEU/SOC) also deployed as a major component of the Iwo Jima ARG. The 26th MEU is headquartered at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Others deploying with the Iwo Jima ARG include Landing Craft Utility (LCU) boats from Assault Craft Unit 2, Detachment D; Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC) vehicles from ACU 4, Detachment D; Beach Master Unit 2; and Fleet Surgical Team 2.
The Iwo Jima ARG deployed March 4 in support of the global war on terrorism, and made a best speed transit to the Arabian Gulf. During the deployment, all three ships in the ARG deployed Marines in Iraq. The ARG’s support of operations in Iraq was cut short in August, when they were ordered from the gulf to Liberia to support peacekeeping efforts. Once there, the 26th MEU/SOC provided a stabilizing presence, which allowed multinational forces from other Western African countries to come in and handle the problem so humanitarian operations could be conducted.
