As an OAS auditor,
you will be placed on a career track progressing from
entry level to staff auditor to auditor-in-charge in
2 to 4 years. This often represents a significant
increase in salary. Promotions above the auditor-in-charge
level are competitive. Auditors demonstrating superior
potential may advance to senior management and executive
positions. Here are a few examples of typical
career advancement

STEVEN - Steven
joined OAS upon his graduation from the University
of Massachusetts. He began his career as an
entry level auditor and is currently a senior
auditor after only 6 years.
Since
joining OAS, Steven passed the CPA exam at the
first sitting, enrolled in an MBA program, and
conducted numerous audits of complex programs
resulting in significant cost savings and program
improvements. Steven's responsibilities include
developing work plan ideas, planning audit assignments,
coordinating audit field work, and writing audit
reports. In addition, Steven is active within
the organization by recruiting at colleges and
universities, acting as the regional training
coordinator, serving on national committees
and working on special projects at the OAS headquarters
in Washington, D.C.
OAS
has supported Steven's professional development
by paying his tuition for a CPA review course
as well as partially paying for graduate courses
benefitting the OAS mission. In addition, Steven
has attended numerous training sessions around
the country to enhance his technical skills.

SYLVIE - Sylvie
graduated from the University of Texas at San
Antonio with a B.B.A. in accounting. She joined
OAS as an entry level auditor and was promoted
to a staff auditor in one year. During this
period, Sylvie enrolled in a CPA review course
which was fully funded by OAS. She sat for the
CPA exam and passed three of the four parts.
In two years, Sylvie was promoted to a GS-11,
and worked on an audit involving child placing
agencies in the foster care program. This
audit, which stemmed from a proposal that Sylvie
and a co-worker submitted to management, resulted
in recoveries of almost $3 million. Sylvie passed
the remaining part of the CPA exam on her next
attempt. She was recognized through the Inspector
General Professional Development Award for her
exceptional achievement.
After her promotion to auditor-in-charge, Sylvie's
assignments included serving as team leader
of a child placing agency audit in two other
states in the region. These audits resulted
in recoveries of several million dollars.
Sylvie
was promoted to a senior auditor. She has held
that position in audits of both foster care
and Medicare home health. Throughout her career
at OAS, Sylvie has received numerous cash awards
for exceptional performance. In addition, she
received two Inspector General Exceptional Achievement
Awards.

|
AMY - Amy
has been an OAS auditor for 8 years. She
started as a staff auditor and was promoted
to an auditor-in-charge in 2 years. Amy earned
a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics
from the University of Texas at San Antonio
and is a certified math teacher. She went
on to earn a Master of Professional Accounting
degree and is a CPA. Amy has worked on a variety
of assignments, including Medicare provider
audits and university contract reviews. Her
speciality is the Medicare managed care program.
In
her first year with OAS, Amy assisted in several
Medicare audits involving durable medical equipment,
graduate medical education, hospital costs,
and ambulance services. After the second year,
Amy served as a team leader and was involved
in a variety of Medicare and university audits.
Since her promotion to senior auditor, Amy has
been responsible for Medicare reviews of psychiatric
services provided by acute care hospitals on
a nationwide and regional level and of health
maintenance organization payments.
Recently,
Amy's work in the home health care area helped
identify unallowable claims totaling $2.6 billion
in four states. She has received the Inspector
General Exceptional Achievement Award three
times.

DAVID - David
began his career as an auditor with OAS after
graduating from the University of Massachusetts.
Since that time, he has taken and passed the
CPA exam, enrolled in an MBA program, and performed
commendable work as a Medicare auditor.
To prepare for the CPA exam, David enrolled
in a CPA review course fully paid for by OAS.
His current courses at Suffolk University are
partially funded by OAS and a scholarship from
the Association of Government Accountants.
In
his 2 years with OAS, David has been promoted
from an entry level auditor to a staff auditor
and has seen his responsibilities and salary
increase. He has attended numerous training
sessions throughout the country to develop his
skills. David has participated in high-profile
audits of the financial statements of the Health
Care Financing Administration, which statistically
projected more than $30 billion in Medicare
overpayments over the 2 years. David's rapid
professional development and increasing responsibilities
provide an excellent foundation for continued
success.
