NATO Atlantic Naval Force Supports Fight Against Terrorism

NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- NATO’s Standing Naval Forces Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) returned to the Eastern Mediterranean Monday (15 April) under control of the Commander Naval Forces Southern Europe (COMNAVSOUTH) for a second tour of duty as Task Force Endeavor.

STANAVFORLANT releived the Standing Naval Force Mediterranean (STANAVFORMED) as NATO’s maritime contribution to the war against international terrorism. The flagships of both NATO forces, HMS Sheffield of the United Kindgom, and SPS Canarias of Spain, were in port at Molo Angioino, Naples this past week for the turnover and staff briefings.

STANAVFORMED, commanded by Commodore Angus Somerville of the British Royal Navy, has been involved in operation Active Endeavor since Jan. 14, 2002. During this period, the Task Force, which included 11 Allied warships and a submarine, patrolled the operational area covering the Mediterranean Sea east of Sicily, monitored shipping lanes and exchanged intelligence informationin in coordinated efforts with elements of the U.S. Sixth Fleet.

Rear Adm. Manuel Otero of the Spanish Navy, assumed command of STANAVFORLANT on April 4. The Naval force normally operates in the Eastern Atlantic under the control of the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT).

The Force is now comprised of Spanish Flagship SPS Canarias; USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) of he United States; HMS Norfolk of the United Kingdom; FGS Luetjens of Germany; HNOMS Narvik of Norway; NRP Vasco Da Gama of Portugal; HDMS Olfert-Fisher of Denmark; and HNMLS Amsterdam of the Netherlands.
