Graduate Research Traineeships

Description

The last competition for this program was held in 1996 after which the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) Program took its place. There are still ongoing GRT projects, the last of which will terminate sometime in 2001.

The Graduate Research Traineeship (GRT) Program was designed to increase the numbers of talented undergraduates enrolling in doctoral programs in science and engineering at US institutions. Graduate student support is provided to high-quality doctoral granting departments in the form of traineeship positions. The colleges and universities receiving awards are responsible for the selection and retention of trainees and for administration of their grants. The program emphasizes graduate educational activities that involve multidisciplinary studies, close ties between education and research, and partnership between academia, industry and government laboratories.
