5/5/2004 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN)  -- Secretary of the Air Force Dr. James G. Roche has approved awarding the Humanitarian Service medal to Airmen who directly participated in tornado relief for the civilian community surrounding Columbus Air Force Base, Miss., in November 2002.

To qualify for the award, a person must have been assigned or attached to a unit providing direct "hands-on" humanitarian-relief actions within the community between Nov. 10 and 13, 2002. He or she also must have been physically present within the community surrounding the disaster area, and either contributed directly or influenced relief efforts.

Eligible Airmen must provide proof of entitlement to their servicing military personnel flight. Supporting documentation may consist of temporary-duty orders, a letter of appreciation, an enlisted or officer performance report reflecting participation, a decoration citation, or other official document which verifies participation.

Specifically excluded from eligibility are Airmen who were present for duty at the specified location but did not make a direct contribution to or influence the action. The commander in charge of the operation at the site makes the final determination on direct or indirect participation. To verify eligibility, Airmen can contact officials from Air Education and Training Command at DSN 487-2549 or the 14th Mission Support Squadron at DSN 742-2575.

Once verified, the servicing MPF will update individual records. Eligibility for Soldiers, Sailors and Marines is subject to authorization by their respective service.
