NEW YORK (NNS) -- The 17th Annual New York City Fleet Week got underway May 26 with a Parade of Ships led by USS Barry (DDG 52), and USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) steaming in as the parade’s anchor.

The Parade of Ships passed the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, proceeded north through New York Harbor and the Hudson River, and to the George Washington Bridge. As the Parade of Ships passed the World Trade Center site, each ship rendered honors in memory of the sacrifices made Sept. 11, 2001. The ships docked at Manhattan’s Pier 86 and Pier 88, and Staten Island’s Stapleton Pier. They will be open for public visitation from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. May 27-31.

More than 4,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from the 12 visiting ships will enjoy the sights and sounds of the city and participate in sports competitions, community relations activities, social events, military demonstrations, and Memorial Day weekend remembrances in all five boroughs.

Hazy weather did not keep New Yorkers from watching the Parade of Ships and enjoying their fleet, and the Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen were excited to be in the “Big Apple,” as well. Members of America’s sea services could be seen venturing out to begin the celebration, tempered by thoughts of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

“Seeing these guys come in today puts into perspective what we do and why we do it, and one of the purposes behind Fleet Week - the commemoration of Memorial Day,” said Navy Counselor 1st Class Nigel Casanova of Patrol Squadron (VP) 65, Point Mugu, Calif.

Ships participating in Fleet Week and their berthing locations are USS Barry (DDG 52), Pier 88 - Manhattan; USS Halyburton (FFG 40), Stapleton Pier - Staten Island; USS Anzio (CG 68), Pier 88 – Manhattan; USCGC Katherine Walker (WLM 552), Stapleton Pier - Staten Island; ONR Starfish (IX 531), Office of Naval Research Afloat Lab, Pier 86 – Manhattan; USS DeWert (FFG 45), Stapleton Pier – Staten Island; USCGC Reliance (WMEC 615), Pier 86 – Manhattan; USS Monterey (CG 61), Stapleton Pier – Staten Island; USS Carney (DDG 64), Stapleton Pier – Staten Island; USS Mahan (DDG 72), Pier 88 – Manhattan; USS Shamal (PC 13), Stapleton Pier – Staten Island; and USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), Pier 88 - Manhattan.
