The
recovery of the bald eagle is truly an American success story.
Thirty years ago,
the bald eagle was in danger of extinction. Loss of habitat, shooting
for feathers and poisoning by the pesticide DDT all contributed to the
near demise of this bird. Since that time, DDT has been banned in the
United States and the bald eagle has been protected by the Endangered
Species Act and other Federal laws. Today, thanks to the efforts of
the American people, the bald eagle once again soars the skies above
our country. In 1999, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed removing
the bald eagle from the List of Threatened and Endangered Wildlife.
