By Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Daniel Henry, Naval Medical Education and Training Command

BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Naval School of Health Sciences (NSHS), Portsmouth is scheduled to broadcast the Surface Force Medical Indoctrination Course (SFMIC) live to the fleet via Video Tele-Training at 8 a.m., Aug. 9.

SFMIC is a weeklong course that provides corpsmen with the basic knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the shipboard medical department. This initiative provides a means for corpsmen to train at their parent command, eliminating the costs associated with traveling for training.

Sailors who are reporting aboard a surface force ship are required to attend SFMIC prior to reporting aboard.

According to Chief Hospital Corpsman (SW/AW/FMF) Patrick Hyde, an independent duty corpsman assigned to the Naval Medical Education and Training Command, SFMIC provides an invaluable resource in preparing corpsmen for ships.

“By taking the course, corpsmen and dental technicians are exposed to the technical aspects of shipboard medicine. It is totally different than what they learn in hospitals and on the wards. It really prepares them for what they are going to be responsible for at sea,” said Hyde. “By completing this course before they report to the ship, we work better as a team and can focus on providing the best possible patient care to our shipmates.”

To register for this broadcast, contact Jenna Haynes, NSHS Portsmouth, at 757-953-6433 or e-mail at jlhaynes-@hsp.med.navy.mil.
