NIMH Web Privacy Policy
Thank you for visiting the National Institute of Mental Health Web site and reviewing our privacy policy. Our privacy policy is clear: NIMH will collect no personal information about you when you visit our Web site unless you choose to provide that information to us.

The following explains how we handle information about your visit to our site:

If You Just Browse or Download Information
If your visit to our site consists only of browsing, reading pages, or downloading information, then we will automatically gather and store just the following generic information (information that does not identify you personally) about your visit:

  1. The Internet domain (for example, "youragency.gov" if you connect from a government domain, "yourschool.edu" if you connect from a university's domain, or "xcompany.com" if you use a private Internet access account) and IP address (an IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer whenever you are surfing the Web) from which you access our site;
  2. The type of browser and operating system you use to access our site (for example, Internet Explorer 6.0 and Windows XP, or Safari and OS X);
  3. The date and time you access our site;
  4. The pages you visit; and
  5. If you linked to our site from another Web site, the address of that site.

This information helps us improve our site and tells us the number of visitors to it and the types of technology they use.

If You Send Us Personal Information
If you choose to provide us with personal information through an e-mail, form, or publication order, we store the question and the e-mail address information so that we can respond electronically. NIMH does not disclose, give, sell, or transfer any personal information about our visitors, unless required for law enforcement or by statute. We permit third-party contractors access to your personal information only when we use them for the initial sorting of e-mails, forms, or publication orders. We require these contractors to handle your personal information in accordance with NIMH privacy protection guidelines.

Cookies
You may occasionally encounter an NIMH Web page that employs "cookies." A cookie is a small file that a Web site transfers to your computer in order to "remember" specific information about your browser "session" (a browser session begins when you open your browser and ends when you close it) while you are connected.

NIMH does not employ cookies to collect personal information about you, but only about your browser session. The cookie makes it easier for you to use the dynamic features of certain pages. The cookie and the information about your session will be automatically destroyed shortly after you close your browser—it is not permanently stored on your computer.

To protect your privacy, be sure to close your browser completely after you have finished conducting business with a Web site that uses cookies. If you are concerned about the potential use of information that cookies gather from your computer, you can set your browser to ask for your permission before it accepts a cookie. Most Internet browsers have settings that let you identify and/or reject cookies.

Endorsement Disclaimer—General
NIMH does not endorse or recommend any commercial products or services. Inclusion of an author's views or opinions on our Web site does not mean they state or reflect those of NIMH or the U.S. Government, and private parties may not use them for advertising or product endorsement purposes.

Endorsement Disclaimer—Medical Information
NIMH does not intend to provide specific medical advice on our Web site, but rather to help visitors better understand mental health and disorders. NIMH will not provide specific medical advice and urges you to consult with a qualified mental health or health care provider for diagnosis and for answers to your personal questions.

Endorsement Disclaimer—Links to Other Sites
Some NIMH Web pages may link to those of other organizations. This does not constitute an endorsement of their policies or products. Once you link to other sites, you are subject to their privacy policies.

Endorsement Disclaimer—Pop-Up Advertisements
When visiting our site, your Web browser may produce "pop-up" advertisements (advertisements that spontaneously appear on your computer screen). The most likely source of such an advertisement is another Web site you visited or third-party software installed on your computer. NIMH does not endorse or recommend products or services featured in advertisements that "pop up" during your visit to our site.

Questions about NIMH Privacy Policies
You should send questions about NIMH privacy policies to the NIMH Privacy Act Officer.
