Powell Swears in New Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs

Constance Berry Newman comes from USAID Africa office

Secretary of State Colin Powell swore in Constance Berry Newman as assistant secretary of state for African affairs in an informal ceremony June 24 in his office.

Newman succeeded Charles Snyder, who has served in an acting capacity since November 1, 2003.

Constance Berry Newman Sworn In
As Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell swore in Constance Berry Newman as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in a small, informal ceremony held today in his office. Ms. Newman succeeds Charles R. Snyder, who has served as Acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs since November 1, 2003.
Ms. Newman previously served at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where she was the Assistant Administrator for Africa since November 27, 2001. Ms. Newman's biography will be posted on our website at www.state.gov/p/af
