MODEL OF U-2 FLOWN BY FRANCIS GARY POWERS

On 1 May 1960, U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers was shot down by the Soviets over Sverdlovsk and spent 21 months in prison before he was exchanged for Col. Rudolf Abel, a Soviet intelligence officer who had been arrested in New York in 1957. The wooden model shown above is one of two used by Powers in March 1962 when he testified at the Senate Armed Services Committee about the downing of his aircraft. The wings and tail are detachable to demonstrate the aircraft's breakup upon impact.
