Today's Naval Occupational Safety and Health, and
Environmental Training Center evolved from the original NAVSEA Safety
School in Bloomington, Indiana founded in 1967. They functioned as the
Navy's source of weapons and explosives safety training for the Naval
Weapons Support Center in Crane, Indiana and in 1970, the School's mission
was expanded to include all aspects of shore occupational safety and
health training.
In 1987, the School was renamed the Naval Safety School and placed
organizationally under the Chief of Naval Technical Training (CNTECHTRA),
reporting as a detachment of Service Schools Command in Great Lakes.
In September 1991, the Naval Safety School was disestablished as a
detachment and relocated to Norfolk, Virginia. Building renovations on the
School's new classroom facility were completed, the command formally
established, and the first classes offered in October 1993. The mission
was expanded in early 1994 to include shore and afloat occupational safety
and health, hazardous material control and management, and afloat
environmental protection training. With this expanded mission came a
change in the School's name to the Naval Occupational Safety and Health
and Environmental Training Center (NAVOSHENVTRACEN) .
In June 1994, NAVOSHENVTRACEN became an Echelon III command reporting
directly to the Chief of Naval Education and Training (CNET).
In May 1995, renovations were completed on the new classroom facility
at NAVOSHENVTRACEN-WEST, Naval Air Station, North Island, San Diego,
California, giving the command training sites on both coasts.
In December 2000, NAVOSHENVTRACEN was marked by renovation, relocation
and expansion at both training sites. The Norfolk training site expanded
to a second building with two additional classrooms and supporting office
spaces and the San Diego training site relocated to a larger facility at
Naval Station San Diego.
In addition to classes in Norfolk and San Diego, NAVOSHENVTRACEN
provides over forty five courses world-wide in major Navy homeports and at
overseas locations.
