Health Effects Subcommittee
to hold Meeting on
March 26, 2002


What: : The March meeting of the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES). Key agenda topics for the meeting include: an overview of the Department of Energy (DOE) Former Workers Program, medical surveillance of former workers at DOE gaseous diffusion plants, and the chronic beryllium disease surveillance at DOE plants.

ATSDR is responsible for evaluating the potential health effects on off-site populations exposed to hazardous substances released from Oak Ridge Reservation. ATSDR has set up these presentations, at the request of the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee, to provide background on DOE programs to assess worker exposure issues.

The DOE is responsible for evaluating the long range health conditions of current and former employees who may be at risk for health problems as a result of their employment at DOE sites.

Who: Members of the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES), but the meeting is open to the public and will include opportunities for the public to comment.

When: Tuesday, March 26, 2002, from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m. The time has been set aside for public comment immediately following the presentations.

Background: The subcommittee is a representative and knowledgeable body of citizens from the Oak Ridge area. The subcommittee provides advice and recommendations to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ATSDR public health activities and research connected with the Oak Ridge Reservation. The subcommittee provides the public with the opportunity to work with agency staff members and to learn more about CDC and ATSDR public health activities.
