International Conference on Chemical MixturesInternational Conference on
Chemical Mixtures 2002

When:  Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday,
September 10-12, 2002
Where: Crowne Plaza Ravinia, Atlanta, Georgia

This conference is being co-sponsored by national and international organizations.

About the Chemical Mixtures Conference

An international conference will be hosted in the fall of 2002 by joint efforts of governmental agencies, universities, and industry groups to address the scientific developments and progress made in the toxicology of chemical mixtures.

People are generally exposed to mixtures of chemicals rather than a single chemical. Such exposures occur through various environmental media and through multiple routes of exposure. To evaluate the joint toxicity of such complex exposures, it is essential to develop strategies that will allow integration of experimental and computational methods for a more scientifically credible risk assessment of chemical mixtures.

This conference will address issues pertaining to chemical mixtures research, mixtures health risk assessment, and computational modeling of chemical mixtures, as described below.

The mission of the conference is to advance the science by exchanging information, stimulating discussions and promoting cooperation among scientists world-wide. This will lead to better ways to conduct mixture research, assess risks from exposure to mixtures, and model the pharmacokinetic / pharmacodynamic of mixtures.

What are the main Conference topics?

Three main Conference topics will be

Mixtures Research

  • Advances in experimental designs of simple and complex mixtures studies.
  • Analysis of low dose chronic and high dose acute exposure studies.
  • Novel methods for end point specific toxicities incorporating cDNA, proteomics, and integrative research.
  • Collaboration among various research entities.

Mixtures Health Risk Assessment
  • Qualitative and quantitative methods for health risk assessments of mixtures.
  • Development of data bases to include information on toxicology of mixtures.
  • Identifying priority mixture combinations.

Computational Methodologies
  • Application and validation of physiologically based pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PBPK/PD) and structure activity relationships (SAR) modeling methodologies.
  • The use of bioinformatics to identify toxic interaction mechanisms.
