Briefing by USAID Administrator Natsios on Recent Visit to Sudan


Andrew S. Natsios, Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will hold a media briefing on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at 2:15-3pm in the State Department Briefing Room on his recent visit to Sudan and Darfur. Also participating will be Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Michael Ranneberger.

In early September, Administrator Natsios and a delegation of his staff traveled to Sudan to review the current humanitarian crisis.  Administrator Natsios held meetings in Khartoum with Sudan’s First Vice President Ali Osman Taha and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Eng. Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid.  While in Darfur, the Administrator traveled to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps, evaluated water and sanitation conditions, and assessed the current food supplies.  In addition, Administrator Natsios held various meetings with many officials from the United Nations, as well as representatives of aid groups currently working in Sudan. 
 
Media representatives who plan to attend are advised to use the 23rd Street entrance and must present one of the following press credentials: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
