WHUT-TV Broadcasts Documentary on Global Landmine Problem to Washington, DC Viewing Area

WHUT/Howard University Television in Washington, DC will broadcast "First Steps: The International Response to the Landmine Crisis," a film produced in cooperation with the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. and Friday, October 8, 2004 at 9:00 p.m.

Narrated by singer/songwriter Emmylou Harris, "First Steps" was filmed on location in Albania, Azerbaijan and Angola. It illustrates the public health menace and socio-economic impact posed by persistent landmines and abandoned ordnance and explores landmine policy issues and the evolution of "humanitarian mine action" (mine clearance, mine risk education, mine survivors assistance).

"First Steps" was produced by Jonathan Silvers, an Emmy Award-winning independent filmmaker. He also produced "Broken Earth," an earlier film on the landmine problem that was broadcast in 2001 in the United States by American Public Television and in 26 countries.
