Question Taken at the October 1, 2004 Daily Press Briefing

U.S. Restrictions on Importation of Books from Particular Countries

Question:  Did the OSCE Representative for Freedom of the Media ask that State remove U.S. restrictions on the importation of books by authors from particular countries? If so, what is the U.S. response?

Answer:  The OSCE Representative for Freedom of the Media did send a letter to Secretary Powell asking the Secretary of State to abolish regulations that require publishers and authors to seek a license from the Treasury Department to publish foreign literature in the U.S. from certain countries. We are now studying the letter in order to arrive at an appropriate response.
