Background

Faleh Jabar is a research fellow at the School of Politics and Sociology, Birkbeck College, University of London. Formerly a lecturer at London Metropolitan University, since 1994 he has directed the Iraqi Cultural Forum Research Group, at Birbeck College. Jabar earlier served as director of research and publications at the Centre of Social Studies in the Arab World, based in Nicosia and Beirut (1983–90). He is author of The Shi'ite Movement in Iraq and editor of other volumes on tribes and power in the Middle East and on social movements in Iraq. He has written and edited several books in Arabic, including State and Civil Society in Iraq and The Impossible Democracy: The Case of Iraq. Over the past decade he has published articles on Iraq and regional issues in journals such as the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP), Le Monde Diplomatique, Financial Times, and The Times. He has also presented papers at venues including the Middle East Institute, Harvard University, Oxford University, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and the Royal Institute for International Relations. Jabar received his Ph.D. in sociology from Birkbeck College, University of London.
