  • Of all Federal officers, 14.8% were women and 32.4% were members of a racial or ethnic minority.

  • The largest employers of Federal officers, accounting for 60% of the total, were the:

    - Immigration and Naturalization Service (19,101)
    - Federal Bureau of Prisons (14,305)
    - U.S. Customs Service (11,634)

    FBI (11,248)

  • About half of all Federal officers were employed in
    - Texas (13,374)
    - California (12,315)
    - the District of Columbia (8,114)
    - New York (7,202)
    - Florida (5,963)
  • Nationwide, there were 32 Federal officers per 100,000 U.S. residents, including 1,421 per 100,000 residents in the District of Columbia. There were more than 50 per 100,000 residents in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Alaska, Hawaii, and Vermont. There were fewer than 10 per 100,000 in Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Iowa.
