Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)

Free from the U.S. Treasury. Pay ALL of your federal taxes including employment tax deposits (FTDs) and your quarterly estimated tax (1040ES) payments electronically - online or by phone 24/7. The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) offers you the convenience and flexibility of making your tax payments through the Internet, or by phone. You can select how you want to make your payments.

You can pay your taxes electronically through major credit card companies and electronic payment providers.




What Types of Individual Taxes Can Be Paid Electronically?
All federal taxes can be paid through EFTPS® year-round once a taxpayer is enrolled. The following types of individual taxes can be paid by electronic funds withdrawal and credit card:

Form 2350, Application for Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (Tax Year 2002) e-file Form 2350 electronically and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software Not applicable
Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals e-file 1040 series tax return and Form 1040-ES and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software or tax professional e-pay by phone or Internet through a service provider and, by doing so, simultaneously file Form 1040-ES
Installment Agreements (Tax Year 1999 and after) Not applicable e-pay by phone or Internet through a service provider (for taxpayers with active installment agreements only)
  • Making an electronic payment eliminates the need to send in the associated paper Form 1040-V, Form 4868, Form 2350, Form 1040-ES or other payment voucher, respectively.
  • All payments must be at least $1. Electronic funds withdrawal and credit card payments should be in whole dollars (round cents to the nearest whole dollar).

When Can Electronic Funds Withdrawal and Credit Card Payments Be Made?

Form 1040 series (U. S. Individual Income Tax Return)

  • This includes Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040-V and TeleFile users.
  • Integrated e-file and e-pay options begin January 10, 2003 and end October 15, 2003.
  • Pay by phone or Internet credit card options begin January 10, 2003 and end December 15, 2003.
  • Taxpayers who receive a tax year 2002 balance due reminder notice can pay by credit card. This option begins May 1, 2003 and ends December 15, 2003.

Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return)

  • Payment options, except TeleFile, begin January 10, 2003 and end April 15, 2003.
  • For taxpayers who are out of the country, the option ends on June 16, 2003.
  • The TeleFile electronic funds withdrawal option begins February 13, 2003 and ends April 15, 2003.

Form 2350 (Application for Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return)

  • For use by U.S. citizens and resident aliens abroad who expect to qualify for special tax treatment.
  • Electronic funds withdrawal option begins January 10, 2003 and ends April 15, 2003.
  • For taxpayers who are out of the country, the option ends on June 16, 2003.

Form 1040-ES (Estimated Tax for Individuals)

  • Electronic funds withdrawal option begins January 10, 2003. Taxpayers can choose one of the following payment effective dates: April 15, 2003, June 16, 2003 or September 15, 2003.
  • Tax Year 2002 credit card options are available through January 22, 2003.
  • Tax Year 2003 credit card options begin March 1, 2003 and ends January 31, 2004.

Installment Agreements (Credit Cards and EFTPS only)

  • Taxpayers with active Installment Agreements can pay past due taxes for tax years 1999 and after beginning January 10, 2003.
  • Credit card options are available through January 31, 2004.
