Personal Leadership

Power and Influence

Faculty: Gail S. Funke

Overview: Inherent in definitions of leadership is the idea of moving and influencing others to your vision. John Kotter cites two critical factors in leadership: a clear sense of your vision, your agenda, what you want to accomplish; and a committed network of followers who will help you implement that vision. This workshop will help you discover the bases of influence that you need to convince others. Power as used here is defined as the many platforms of influence you have and need to accomplish your goals. As a Senior Federal executive, legitimate and coercive powers are not enough. Now you must influence those over whom you have no direct authority: peers, superiors, external customers, public interest groups, other agencies. Power that is appropriately used can make Covey's win-win situations a reality for you. The interactive nature of this course will provide participants ample opportunities to practice their influencing skills.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and identify various sources of power available to Federal executives
  • State and apply the seven power bases
  • Experience and apply concepts of positional power
  • Understand communication strategies for large and small groups and one-on-one
  • Practice communication strategies using workshop learnings
  • Apply the learnings to actual back-home challenges
  • Develop action steps for using the learnings after FEI
