Pentagon Metro Entrance Facility Project

PENTAGON METRO ENTRANCE FACILITY GRAND OPENING November 21, 2002
Acting Program Manager for the Pentagon Renovation Program addresses the crowd gathered to celebrate the completion of the Pentagon Metro Entrance Facility Project. The Metro Entrance Facility was a security-driven project designed to eliminate the direct entry from the Metro tunnel and provide a secure screening facility for Pentagon visitors.	Participating in the ceremony, from left to right, are Chuck Malacarne, MEF Project Team Leader, John Pugrud, Deputy Chief of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, Aren Almon-Kok, founder of the Protecting People First Foundation, Ray DuBois, Director of Administration and Management and Mike Sullivan, Acting Program Manager for the Pentagon Renovation Program.	The new Pentagon Metro Entrance Facilty is the new location for the Pentagon tour office and badge office. Several promotional displays in the tour office provided a colorful backdrop for the Grand Opening Ceremony.

METRO ENTRANCE FACILITY CELEBRATES
INITIAL OPENING!

A pre-dawn view of the newly-opened MEF escalators.	Pentagon commuters taking advantage of the shorter walk made possible by the new covered pathway to the building.	Pentagon employees can check in at the opening of the facility and proceed directly into the building.
On July 31, the Pentagon Renovation Program proudly celebrated the initial opening of the Metro Entrance Facility (MEF). While the entire facility won't be completed until November 2002, commuters no longer need to walk around the entire construction area in order to enter the building. A canopy-covered walkway to the MEF allows Pentagon commuters direct access to the building from the bus loop and the Metro Rail escalators.

PENTAGON TRANSIT CENTER OPEN!
The Pentagon Transit Center portion of the Metro Entrance Facility is now open and operational. Bus service has now returned to the Pentagon following the relocation to Pentagon City as a result of the events of September 11th, 2001. The Pentagon Renovation Program would like to remind transit users that portions of the facility are still under construction.

The new Pentagon Transit Center is a modern design incorporating many suggestions from accessibility focus groups.

The new bus facility is only a part of the new Pentagon Metro Entrance Facility project. It was necessary to construct the replacement before the existing bus facility could be demolished. Now, while the demolition is completed and the new Pentagon entrance is constructed, it is not possible to maintain safe pedestrian passage through the site. So, pedestrians must be routed around the site. This current walkway configuration is temporary.

To minimize the duration of this inconvenience to users of the facility, a portion of the new Pentagon entrance will be constructed to expedite direct access into the Pentagon. Components of this access will be temporary (such as barricades), but other elements will be part of the permanent structure (such as elevators and escalators). This configuration is expected to be in place by July 31, 2002.

This configuration, too, will be temporary. Construction on the remainder of the structure will continue until the entire Pentagon entrance is completed in November 2002. Only then will all pathways between the Pentagon, the Pentagon Metro Station, the new Pentagon Transit Center, and parking areas be completed.


To mark the opening of the new facility, project managers gave the new Pentagon Transit Center a patriotic feel with red, white and blue lighting. To the right, transit users board a bus on the upper platform early Monday morning.
