USGS Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What are the formats of digital orthophoto quadrangles (DOQs)?

Answer:

DOQs can be obtained either compressed or uncompressed. Compressed DOQs are distributed in a JPEG (jfif-compliant) format. Uncompressed DOQs are technically not in a format. They are distributed as raw gray-scale, band-interleaved-by-line data. Software must be able to ingest data by row/column reference. Most remote sensing and image processing software will read raw gray-scale images.
