Fact Sheet
EPA's Toxic Chemical Release Inventory (TRI)

TRI is an annually compiled series of databases that constitute the toxic releases files on the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET®). This series, 1987-2002 reporting years, contains information on the annual estimated releases of toxic chemicals to the environment and is based upon data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Mandated by the Superfund legislation, TRI's data covers air, water, land, and underground injection releases, as well as transfers to waste sites, and waste treatment methods and efficiency, as reported by industrial facilities around the United States. TRI also includes data related to source reduction and recycling.

Web Access/Searching

TRI is accessible, free of charge, via TOXNET at: http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov

Users can check one or more TRI boxes to select the year(s) to search. A "Select all" option allows all years to be searched simultaneously. TRI can also be searched by chemical or other name, chemical name fragment, or Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number. Also searchable are facility or parent company name, state, city, county, or zip code. Search results can be limited to releases greater than a specified number of pounds, and individual releases can be summed together to display a total amount. Search results can easily be viewed, printed or downloaded. Search results are displayed in relevancy ranked order, but may be sorted by substance name, facility name, city or state.

Users can easily conduct their TRI search strategy against other databases: Hazardous Substances Data Bank®, Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System, Integrated Risk Information System, and GENE-TOX.
