"Minority Health Advisory Committee Meeting Update June 2003"

Overview

The Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced on December 28, 2000, the appointment of 12 members to serve on the Department's OMH Advisory Committee on Minority Health. The advisory committee will advise the Secretary on ways to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations, and on the development of goals and program activities within the Department.

The Advisory Committee on Minority Health, created by the Health Professions Education Partnerships Act of 1998 (PL 105-392), is chaired by Louis Stokes, a lawyer, former Congressman from Ohio, and former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. The 12 committee members are not employees or officers of the Federal government. The members are from eight States, the District of Columbia, and one U.S. Pacific Territory. They represent racial and ethnic communities and have expertise on a wide range of health issues including the unique challenges facing minorities in rural and urban communities, children, women, elders, people with disabilities, mental illness, and AIDS.

The Committee meets four times a year. The first meeting of the Committee was held on March 29-30, 2001.

Solicitation of Nominations

The solicitation of nominations for four vacancies on the HHS Advisory Committee on Minority Health is being held February 15, 2002 thru May 15, 2002. Nominations will be considered if received at the appropriate address, no later than 5:00 P.M. EST on May 15, 2002. Committee members will serve their appointment to a four-year term beginning December 2002.
