Colonel Joseph D. Cassel, Jr., USMC Commander: Defense Logistics Information Service Colonel Cassel, Jr., became the 18th Commander of Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS) on July 25, 2002, coming from his recent assignment at Camp Pendleton, California. Colonel Cassel is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Colonel Cassel has had several Fleet Marine Force assignments during his career. He has participated in tactical and humanitarian operations in Beirut, Lebanon from 1982-83; Fiery Vigil, Philippines and Post-Desert Storm in 1991; Liberia Assessment Team in 1993; Operation Support Hope, Rwanda in1994; and Millennium exercises in Egypt, Israel, and Jordan in 1999-2000. Additionally, Colonel Cassel has served as a Materiel Management, Wholesale Inventory, and Quality Assurance Officer at MCLB, Albany, Georgia; Fuels and Engineer Officer, Logistics Operations Officer and Executive Officer in the Logistics and Security Assistance Directorate, U.S. European Command, Stuttgart, Germany; and Head, Exercise Support Division/Enhanced Equipment Allowance Pool, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twenty-nine Palms, California. Colonel Cassel wears the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with a gold star, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Chester State College, Pennsylvania and was commissioned in 1979.
