Transition
The World Wide Web provides the Department of Defense with a powerful
tool to convey information quickly and efficiently on a broad range of
topics. It has allowed the Department to embrace a Revolution in Business
Affairs and re-engineer many of its business practices, such as paper-free
contract administration and finance, Internet-based commerce, and
Internet-based publishing. The global reach of the Web makes information,
whether a press release or a statistical chart, easily available to
everyone from individual Service members to the international community.
At the same time, the Department has recognized that the Internet
may provide potential adversaries with a potent instrument to obtain,
correlate, and evaluate an unprecedented volume of aggregated information
on defense personnel and activities. The Department now assesses information
posted on public DoD Web sites to ensure national security is not
compromised or personnel placed at risk. On September 23, 1998, the
Deputy Secretary of Defense outlined this problem and described the
Department's efforts to balance customer needs with a concern for
preserving security and privacy.
While we are examining Departmental criteria and procedures for posting
materials on the internet, we are also updating and improving our
own web site. In November 1998 the site moved to a new server, with
a new IP address. As an ongoing project, we have been developing a
new "look and feel," reorganizing and updating most of the pages,
adding new content, and ensuring Section 508 compliance. Should you
find a page not in compliance, please notify us as soon as possible.
