Dr. Steven C. Beering was born in Berlin,
Germany, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1953. He earned
his B.S. and M.D. degrees at the University of Pittsburgh. From
1983 to 2000, he served as president of Purdue University and the
Purdue University Research Foundation. He became president emeritus
in 2000 and continues to serve as director of the Purdue Research
Foundation. He also holds appointments as professor of medicinal
chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Purdue and as professor
of medicine at Indiana University.
Before coming to Purdue, Beering was Dean of Medicine and Director
of the Indiana University Medical Center for 10 years. He has held
numerous national offices, including chairmanship of the Association
of American Medical Colleges and the Association of American Universities.
He is a former regent of the National Library of Medicine.
Beering serves on a number of national and corporate boards, including
American United Life Insurance Company, Eli Lilly and Company, and
NiSource Inc. He is a Trustee of the University of Pittsburgh.
Beering is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the
Royal Society of Medicine, and a member of the Institute of Medicine
of the National Academy of Sciences and the Indiana Academy.
Dr. Beering was renominated to National Science Board by President
Bush on September 23, 2004. He is currently serving as consultant
to the National Science Board pending Senate confirmation.
