A schematic representation of a human head with an intraocular retinal prosthesis
The new ERC for microelectronic systems is conducting research whose resulting technology will enable implantable/portable devices that can treat presently incurable diseases such as blindness. This image shows a schematic representation of a human head with an intraocular retinal prosthesis consists of 16 electrodes arrayed on a 4-by-4 grid; these electrodes are stimulated by digitized images transmitted to the device from a camera mounted on a pair of glasses. The electrodes, in turn, stimulate the patient's remaining retinal neurons.
