Science provides the foundation for credible decision-making. Through adequate knowledge about the risks to human health and ecosystems, EPA can target the hazards that pose the greatest risks and anticipate environmental problems before they reach a critical level.
Although all of EPA uses science for policy and regulatory decision-making, and various EPA offices perform research, the responsibility for leadership in science at EPA resides with the Science Advisor who is supported by a small staff in the Office of Science Advisor.
