Federal Sustainability Summit Convenes in Washington, DC September 28, 2004

Science and Technology for SustainabilityRecently, a summit meeting of federal managers was convened by EPA Research and Development, Office of the Federal Environmental Executiveexit EPA and International Centre for Leadership Results, Gettysburg Collegeexit EPA. The summit was an effective means for participants to define sustainability issues relevant to their agencies and to explore ways to better coordinate across their groups. EPA understands that the best approach toward answering questions on sustainability come from working with our many partners in a collaborative environment.

To encourage and strengthen the many existing regional, state and local efforts on sustainable development, EPA is participating and funding collaborative projects such as this that focus on concrete local and regional problems and solutions. These projects transcend traditional regulatory approaches to air, water and land and take a long-term view while measuring short-term progress. Project areas focus on watershed management, stream restoration and industrial practices. Project partners include state and local governments, the private sector, nonprofit organizations and the public.
