HHS Announces 2004 REACH Grants

Six states, six tribes and one territory have received FY 2004 Residential Energy Assistance Challenge Option (REACH) grants from the U.S. Department of Human Services, Division of Energy Assistance. The states and their grant amounts are as follows:

Colorado, $1,016,205; Connecticut, $607,753; District of Columbia, $1,100,000; Nebraska, $836,589; Nevada, $1,000,000; and Oregon, $999,984. Colorado and the District of Columbia received additional funds for energy efficiency education services. Colorado is the only state that has not previously received a REACH grant.

Tribes received the following:   Alaska’s Central Council of Tlingit and Haida, $175,000; Oklahoma’s Cherokee Nation, $174,989; Michigan’s Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa Indians, $149,719; Montana’s Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council, $150,000;  South Dakota’s Rosebud Sioux, $150,000; and United Tribes of Kansas and SE Nebraska, $70,000. The Tlingit and Haida and Cherokee received additional funds for energy efficiency education services. All of the tribes except the Rosebud are prior REACH recipients; the Tlingit Haida, Grand Traverse Band, Northern Cheyenne, and United Tribes have won several times previously.

The Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands received $150,000, its third REACH grant. For more historical details about REACH, check the state tables at http://www.ncat.org/liheap/clntself.htm and the tribal tables at http://www.ncat.org/liheap/tribrech.htm.
